collarPicking a collar and lead for your Labrador isn’t always as easy as it sounds!

We find the best thing to do is to start by measuring your dog’s neck carefully, to check the length of collar you need.

Labradors are often medium in some styles, but large in others, so make sure you select the correct size before you buy.

Leads and collars come in a variety of different styles. So to save you searching around, we’ve collected some of our favourite styles and designs below.

Labrador Leads

Which you lead you want to choose will depend not only on which you think is the nicest looking, but which is most appropriate to your dog and your current activity. For walks in the park or around town, a traditional collar and lead will probably be fine.

For field work a slip lead is usually most appropriate, or to manage a strong pulling dog you might like a harness as a temporary aid until training is complete.

Engraved I.D. Tags

In the UK the Control of Dogs Order 1992 tells us that we must attach a tag to our dog’s collar when he is in a public place, with a note of our name and address.

Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be an issue when it comes to looking nice! We have found a couple of options for dog tags, which will enhance your best friend’s good looks, whilst providing that all important information.

This fun tag comes in a huge range of colour options. With plenty of space on the back for your details.

  1. I am surprised to see no mention of a Martingale collar/lead. At my dog training school they encourage use of the Martingale collar and lead for humane control of your dog.
I would also like to point out that there is a proper way to use head restraint collars, such as the Halti Training Lead. You should also have a conventional lead around the dogs neck. Reasoning is (again from my dog trainer) if your dog quickly snaps its head around (such as when it spies a cat) it can actually harm its neck if only the Halti training lead is used.
The Halti Training Lead is brilliant for training as it places pressure on the dog’s muzzle and dogs don’t like that. It however is not advisable to use this as the sole form of restraint.

  2. Surprised that Traditional Tags don’t appear to comply with The Control of Dogs Act. Must have the surname of the owner and recommended that they don’t have the dog’s name

    1. Bob, what country is that regulation for? I live in Australia where the dog’s name and a phone number are recommended.

  3. I have just bought a Gen con lead that’s like a bridle. Its fabulous. Stops my labrador from pulling
